Science Comes Alive on the South Side! UChicago's Largest South Side Science Festival

UChicago's largest-ever STEM celebration invited kids to explore lasers, robots, slime, and more—sparking curiosity and community connection across the South Side.

The University of Chicago hosted its largest-ever South Side Science Festival, welcoming over 4,300 children and families—many from South Side communities—to explore more than 110 hands-on STEM activities. From freezing racquetballs in liquid nitrogen to painting with electrically conductive MXenes, kids got to see, touch, and experiment with real science alongside over 700 UChicago scientists and 200 volunteers. The festival, sponsored by several UChicago divisions, aims to nurture kids’ natural curiosity and show that science is for everyone. For many families, it’s become an annual tradition of discovery and connection between the university and the community.
