As of April 1, 2026, Raghu Mirmira, MD, PhD was appointed as the next director of the Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) at the University of Chicago's Biological Sciences Division and Pritzker School of Medicine. An MSTP alumnus and former MSTP director at Indiana Univeristy, Mirmira is an internationally recognized diabetes researcher whose NIH-funded work has spanned more than two decades, advancing understanding of type 1 diabetes. Since joining UChicago in 2019, he has held several leadership roles, including Director of the Diabetes Research and Training Center and Vice Chair for Research in the Department of Medicine, and has demonstrated a deep commitment to mentoring physician-scientists. In his new role, he will lead strategic efforts to recruit, train, and mentor MD/PhD students while strengthening NIH-supported training grants. He succeeds Marcus Clark, MD, who led the MSTP for 15 years and will remain active in the BSD as Section Chief of Rheumatology.
